So You Want to Draw 101 – Supplies

     Hello Creatives!!

I went on a shopping trip to Michael’s to help you select supplies for this beginning drawing unit. I looked for the most basic supplies to start with, yet those that will yield the best results. Shop happy!!

Paper  –  Many brands and kinds available for different uses.  You want a “Drawing” pad, but “Sketching” would be fine too.

Prices range widely, but Strathmore is a good moderately priced brand.  What’s really important with paper is the

WEIGHT. The paper should be heavy enough to manage the media you want to use. Drawing paper is 80-90 lbs.

                     Sketching paper is only 60lbs.

Pencils  –  Drawing pencils come in “hardnesses”. The numbers on the pencils describe how soft or hard the graphite is and

how dark the mark it will be. Having 6 pencils in a set will give you a wide range, but you could start with just 3.

I like the brands Derwent or Faber Castel, for price and quality.

Other tools  –  Erasers (gum, vinyl, pink pearl), Sharpie, ruler, compass, protractor
