So You Want to Draw 101 – Philosophy

“My line drawing is the purest and most direct translation of my emotions”  Henri Matisse

What shall  our philosophy of Drawing be?  Just as every other field of study has one, drawing is the necessary “base and core” for all Art. Through its clarity and simplicity the viewer can experience the artist’s ideas and emotions.

For the beginner, drawing sharpens observation skills and increases perception of the world around. Drawing is the first step to working out ideas, poses, gestures, and to experiment with composition. It contains all the formal, conceptual, and fundamental elements of Art in its simplest and most direct form. But as these skills develop, drawing can take on a beauty all its own. So let’s value its charm and the pleasure it gives while we explore some possibilities, as those possibilities are endless.
