So You Want to Draw 101- Perspective

Perspective – “The art of drawing solid objects on a 2 dimensional surface to give the correct impression of their height, width, depth, and position in relation to each other depending on the viewer’s view point.” So that’s the definition, what does it mean?
We all know how to draw a square. But a square is a flat shape, devoid of any depth. Perspective teaches how to draw that square as a 6 sided cube. It is based on a series of guidelines and points that help the artist create a realistic sense of depth. This technique is most helpful when drawing technical, architectural , or any geometric, box-like forms and environments. In technical drawing it is necessary to draw as realistic as possible with proportions correct and the perceived angles true.
There are 3 types of linear perspective; 1 point, 2 point, and 3 point. We will be starting with 1 point perspective this week as it is the simplest to understand and replicate. To draw in perspective will improve the realism of your drawing like no other method learned before.
MC Escher was a graphic design artist who was a master at playing with perspective in his illustrations. Using the rules of mathematics, Escher made walls become ceilings, made stairs climb in all directions, made the seemingly impossible possible. If you look closely at this image, Waterfall, the water does appear to be falling from the top, and yet the channels the water travels through are level with each other. Let the fun begin!!
