Drawing Exercise #7

We discussed 5 tricks that will give the illusion that your 2 dimensional image expresses space and depth. These techniques are composition (foreground, middle ground and background), size ,placement, overlapping, and perspective. And we used a beach picture as reference for each of these techniques.

For this exercise find a landscape picture that you like, either one you took yourself or an image from a magazine. Draw it on your paper paying close attention to how the “space” tricks are demonstrated in the picture. Are the trees different sizes as they recede into the background? Is the house in front of the mountain because I can see the whole house and only part of the mountain?

I drew our reference beach picture as my  “space” drawing exercise. I choose watercolor paper and after sketching it out with pencil, I drew with a fine sharpie marker.  I left it rather loose, with big open areas so I can use this as a practice painting  next month when we start a unit on Watercolor painting.
