This challenge was to throw several CUPS and then attach HANDLES to them. An average size cup takes from 1lb to 1 1/2lbs of clay. I prepared to throw 4 cups, a nice set I thought. However, the clay had thoughts of its own, and only 2 survived the process. There are generally 2 ways to “pull” a handle. I’m not very good at getting a constistant handle by elongating a wet coil of clay (imagine the clay scene from “Ghost”). These 2 handles were rolled and shaped to fit the cups. Much better symmetry . But my favorite part was the surface decoration, sgraffito through colored slip (liquid clay). I will go into more detail about the many techniques of surface decorating next week. The results of the day’s labor…. 2 cups ready for bisque firing and glaze.
