In ceramics, form is very important. After all, this is a 3-dimensional media. But I find I lean toward the plethora of options to decorate the surface of the ceramic vessel.
Along with all the possibilities glazes have to offer, there are several other techniques to try. My favorite is Sgrafitto. The word “sgrafitto” means “to scratch” in Italian. It is a decorating technique created by applying a layer/s of a colored slip to leather hard pottery and scratching off areas to leave a contrasting image, pattern, or texture on the surface.
Another design technique I’ve used moderately is Wax Resist. Liquid wax is applied to bisque ware in order to “resist” the glaze (actually repels the glaze) in designated areas. The wax can be applied with a brush or slip trailer to create designs and patterns.
And if the ceramic piece is not going to be glaze fired, there are other ways of decorating the surface. Watercolors, markers, acrylic paint and my personal favorite, Rub and Buff are all possibilities. Rub and Buff finishes are fine metallic powers mixed with carnauba wax. Rub a small dab with a finger or soft cloth onto the fired ceramic or painted surface. It beautifully enhances textured patterns and designs. Finally, gently buff to a glowing luster finish.
