Color Theories

“Monochromatic” is one of 9 commonly used color schemes. The word

Monochromatic literally means “mono = one, chrome = color”. It is a color

scheme using only one color. You create color differences when you add black

and white to that one color (black and white are not colors). This was a favorite 

painting technique of mine when I was teaching art “on a cart” in portable rooms that had

no running water, because we didn’t have to wash the brush to change colors.

When you add white to a colore it’s called a “tint”. Adding black will creat “shades”.

For example, red plus white is pink, red plus black is maroon. Hard to believe whole

paintings can be planned around using ony one color.
